Writer's workshop

The Prompts
1.) Childhood fears you’ve taken into your adult life.
2.) Write a post that begins and ends with a merry-go-round.
3.) Why were you mortified? Write about a true embarrassing moment as though it was happening in slow motion.
4.) Open letter to a celebrity.

5.) Oprah says we all have a story. If you were on her show, what would your story be? What would you be talking about? What advice would she give you? Write about it and provide a snippet of your interview together.

As a child I grew up on the water.  My family had a sailboat and we sailed the Chesapeake Bay.  We would spend weeks at a time on the boat, my mom, my dad, my brother and I.  We traveled up and down the bay and saw all kinds of things.  We have been in very bad scary storms and all kinds of high winds.  Things that scared me at the time and woulds seem like something that would stick with me, but didn't.  I remember being in storms and thinking here we are in the middle of the water with a metal pole (the mast) sticking up from our boat, we are just asking for it.  Nothing ever happened.
The one fear I had and still carry with me today is a fear of bridges.  I remember sitting on the bow rail of the boat telling my dad where oncoming boats were (this was just a ploy to keep me busy) and being afraid whenever we went under a bridge.  For some reason I always envisioned a car falling from the bridge and hitting our boat.  Don't ask me where I got this idea or why I thought this I just did.  I did not like going under bridges.  To make things worse I did not like to drive over a bridge either because I was afraid that something would happen and we would veer off the bridge and fall into the water.
With that vision still in my mind to this day I do not like to drive over a bridge or go under one on a boat.  I do drive over bridges almost everyday and I am fine.  I just focus on where I am driving and don't look over the side. I also pray that there is no traffic that would cause me to stop on a bridge because then I might get really nervous.  Since we have sold our boat I don't go under many bridges.  We do get to take the boys out on the grandparents boats and one day we will have another boat so I will have to once again face my fear of going under bridges but I am sure I will be fine.  After all it is just a funny little fear.

I did not have a good picture to go with this so I found a picture of my parent's boat.  This is not my childhood sailboat, my brother owns that, but it is one of the boats I can take my boys out on now.

  1. Very interesting post. Some fears can stay with us for years. I did this prompt too but my post is very different...

  2. Nice one!
My greatest fear is of losing my loved ones. We all have this fear which stayes with us for whole life.
